The Avon School Levy Committee would like to thank the citizens of Avon for the passage of Issue 12. Issue 12 will help to provide stability to the District as the school funding in Ohio is continually shifted to the taxpayers from the state. We are appreciative of the financial support for the District.

While the failure of Issue 11 is truly saddening, the community of Avon will continue to grow and the need for additional district capacity, as well as the updating of buildings with technology and utility advances, will still be needed. If you would like to help support a future bond effort, please email supportavonschools@gmail.com and we will contact you.

The Avon Local School District is a dynamic resource providing excellent value for the taxpayers of Avon. The growth of the school district over the past 15 years (the last time a new money bond was requested) has led to Avon being the 3rd fastest growing district in the state. However, Avon currently ranks as the lowest “cost per pupil” District in the state, currently 613 out of 613. Combine this with our “excellent with distinction” academic rating, our wonderful performing arts programs and the strong sports teams, and you can see why the community of Avon can be proud of our students and our schools.

Because of this continued growth, on Tuesday, March 6, 2012 we are asking the citizens of Avon to support our children as we place Issue 11, a 32 million dollar bond (for 32 years) on the ballot. This bond will cost a homeowner $38.29 per year per $100,000 of value (or $3.19 per month).

In addition, the community will have the opportunity to RENEW two expiring emergency levies. The two expiring levies are being combined into one renewal (Issue 12) to help alleviate voter fatigue, but still provide the community with the opportunity to vote on the renewal levies. Both of the expiring levies have been previously renewed by the community. The combined millage rate for the RENEWAL levy (Issue 12) will be 3.21 mills (which equals $98.32 per year per $100,000 of value (or $8.19 per month). This is not an increase in taxes only a renewal of previously approved levies. The renewal of the combination levy will generate $2,500,000 annually for the next ten years.

Both the renewal levy and the middle school bond are important for proper district planning during our continued growth cycle. The bond is different than an operating levy and can only be used for the capital purchases, such as a new “bricks and mortar” building. The plan is to consolidate the two oldest buildings in the district and present a new, efficient middle school (6th-8th) to the community for the 2014-’15 school year. The current Village School will be retired and the kindergarten programs moved to the current one story middle school, resulting in a much improved layout for our littlest learners. 6th grade will be moved from the Heritage North campus to the new middle school, resulting in a combined 3rd-5th Heritage campus to alleviate the current crowding issues at the two Heritage Schools. These changes will allow the district to maintain the current high academic standards as Avon continues to grow and mature with students entering the district.

The levy renewal will allow the district to keep planning and supporting our children through the programs, classes and instructional opportunities currently provided. With uncertain financial funding being available from the state, the responsibility to educate the students of our community relies on the support of the taxpayers. Keeping our current funding level stable allows the school district to plan for our continued success and strong education provided to the students of Avon.

The Avon Board of Education does not take lightly the choices to ask the citizens of Avon for financial support. We are the first line in defense for protecting the resources of our constituents and work diligently to use only the required amount of taxpayer resources to achieve our great academic results. Comparing Avon to our peers within the entire state, the results speak for themselves with the value that Avon Schools provide to the community. The strong record of voter support from our community shows that Avon is continuing on a proper path as we continue to face the challenges of a growing district.

In summary, the phrases “building for today, preparing for tomorrow” and “planning for our growth” continue to aptly apply to the school district. With a very low cost to the taxpayers, consistent with the historical requests of the school district, the community has strong reason to be proud of the schools and support them as our growth continues. A YES vote on Issues 11 & 12 will help insure the continued success of the school District over the next decade. We encourage all residents to review the facts for themselves and vote for the continued success of our District and community.

The Avon School Levy Committee
